Durga Puja celebrations highlight the secular values upon which Bangladesh was founded

As the Durga Puja celebrations come to a close today for the Hindu community, let us remember the spirit of harmony that binds all of us together on this very special occasion. 

The festival celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, representing the triumph of good over evil, and serves to highlight lessons each and every one of us can relate to. 

What is especially heartening is the inclusive nature of the festival, which sees people not just from the Hindu community but from all walks of life partaking in the various celebrations taking place all over the country. 

Pluralism remains a cornerstone of any functioning democracy, and the Durga Puja celebrations highlight the secular values upon which Bangladesh was founded. 

Unfortunately, recent incidents have shown that communal discord still remains a very real problem in certain spheres of our country, with certain groups and people striving to create disharmony amongst the peace-loving citizens of Bangladesh. 

As such, it has never been more important for us as a nation to hold and celebrate these values, and to ensure that each and every single community is represented and valued within our national consciousness.

It is a duty that we all share, especially our religious leaders, for whom it is their responsibility to ensure that messages of peace and communal harmony spread through our communities.
